An 8,000 Mile Solo Hike
In 2023, I am doing the Calendar Year Triple Crown: hiking the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail all within one year. Under optimal summer conditions, each individual trail takes about 5–6 months to complete.
All total, the Triple Crown is 7,940 miles (12,778 km). To complete it within one year requires hiking over 21 miles every single day. But with trips to towns periodically to resupply and travel time between trails, it’s more like hiking a marathon every day while carrying a 35–45 pound (15–20 kg) backpack. My goal is to do 30+ miles (48 km) per day.
Trail | Length | Northern Terminus | Southern Terminus | Organization |
---|---|---|---|---|
Appalachian Trail (AT) |
2,190 miles (3,524 km) | Mount Katahdin, Maine, USA | Springer Mountain, Georgia, USA | Appalachian Trail Conservancy |
Continental Divide Trail (CDT) |
3,100 miles (4,989 km) | Waterton Lake, Glacier National Park, Montana, USA/Canada border | Crazy Cook Monument, Hachita, New Mexico, USA/Mexico border | Continental Divide Trail Coalition |
Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) |
2,600 miles (4,265 km) | Monument 78, Pasayten Wilderness, USA/Canada border | Campo, California, USA/Mexico border | Pacific Crest Trail Association |
