DPI Doesn’t Matter! Pixels Do!

I have seen so many conversations on the Internet concerning what DPI people should set their photos to. It seems every idiot with a keyboard chimes in, and I’m about to become one of those idiots… Let me save you the trouble of reading this entire article by summing it up in one sentence: DPI does matter. Seriously. DPI does not matter for your photos. Leave it alone. Set it to 1. Set it to a billion. It does not matter. The

Support Cave Photography

I am an avid caver, and as a photographer, my primary focus is cave photography. Caves are a unique environment that very few people get to experience. With my photos, I can share that experience with a broad audience, show them the beauty of the underground world, give them something tangible that they can see and understand, and educate them about cave conservation in the process. However, capturing these images requires a tremendous amount of work. My typical cave photography

Just for Fun

Here’s a collection of funny and quirky photos that I’ve taken over the years. Let me know if you enjoy them in the comments below.

Helictites

I am fascinated by helictites. These are formations that defy gravity and grow horizontally or even upward. The mechanics of how they form are still the subject of debate, but the current theories are: capillary forces, wind, piezoelectric forces, or bacteria. In my untrained opinion, all are viable explanations. I have taken photos of helictites that are clearly formed by capillary forces (Three Fingers Cave) and others that are clearly formed by wind (Logan’s Cave) or wind/water (O’Neal Waterfall Cave).

Cave Critters

Updated: 2019-03-13. A sampling of the cave critters that I’ve encountered over the decades.

Photo Comparisons

In my quest for the perfect photo, I often take more than one photo of the same subject. Some of the photos are quite interesting in a side-by-side comparison. Here are a few of my favorites. Scorpion under Blacklight This is NOT a trick or Photoshop manipulation. This is what scorpions look like under blacklight. If you don’t know, scorpions glow under blacklights. Here’s a photo from Kickapoo Cavern where the Park Ranger had a blacklight specifically for that purpose.

Texas Cavers Calendar 2018

Texas Cavers Calendar

Every few years, Texas cave photographers put out a cave calendar. I was impressed with the photography and wanted to contribute my own calendar. I had a vision. I didn’t want a calendar of naked people who happened to be in a cave. I wanted the emphasis to be Texas caves which happened to have naked people in them.
